San Diego’s political leaders are on board

With the election of Todd Gloria, San Diego’s next mayor supports a “nuanced” and balanced compromise solution for vacation rentals. In conversations with Gloria and his staff, we have found his office to be supportive of the three goals described in “What does a compromise need to be effective” (below). Further, City Attorney Mara Elliott’s office has worked closely with Campbell’s office on the compromise. At the October Planning Commission hearing, the City Attorney’s representative said regulations like the ones proposed in the compromise are needed to make enforcement/compliance more effective. City Council will have five new members, but at least two of the holdovers would support a compromise solution. A Democrat, Gloria’s endorsement of a compromise would carry great weight on a nine-person council that has eight Democrats.
