Key groups are aligned for a compromise

For years, vacation rentals divided San Diego into two groups, most memorably characterized by red and green shirts worn to City Council hearings. Now, two of the leading groups on opposite sides of the vacation rental issue have come together to propose a compromise. Unite Here has long opposed STRs. Expedia (VRBO) is a leading platform for STR rentals. It is significant they are working together for a solution. Further, at October’s Planning Commission virtual hearing on Campbell’s compromise, Airbnb offered that it also would support a compromise, with only a slightly higher cap than the one agreed to by Unite Here and Expedia. The efforts to finally drive home a compromise have been joined by Share San Diego and others. Like the Planning Commission, we recommend changes in Campbell’s compromise, but believe it is a promising start.
